WHY NOT?

I met a man, a juggler,

And he passed some time with me

Balancing sticks upon his nose

And juggling odd debris.

Balls danced merrily in his hands

To glitter in the air,

Small boxes tumbled about themselves

By his commanding flair,

And a dozen eggs, it seemed to me,

Commenced, for him to fly.

And then he juggled rainbowed rings

That colored up the sky

And silver-sparkled clubs of gold

That twinkled and soared as high,

And showered us with shells and stones

There was nothing he would not try.

The cascades of things all made me laugh

And from him I could not shy;

His smile was warm, and honest, too

I forgot just how to cry.

I had to know, I had to ask,

"Oh, juggler ... juggler, why?"

He turned around and flashed his smile.

"My friend, because I care.

I offer all my very best

It is myself I share."

And then he left, that juggler,

But now I think I see:

It is his happy gift to all

That lets him live so free.

FROM LARRY FORSBERG in New Haven

I was inspired by the last issue of the Newsletter to include a couple of news clippings from our local paper, the New Haven Register. The first is from Yale's graduations ceremonies last week [same one Lou Carroll sent in as mentioned in "Brief Notes" column -- ed.]. The other is a shot of myself juggling in clown makeup at the last "Freddy Fixer Parade" here in New Haven.

I'd like to add a couple of announcements. The first is that in New Haven on the weekend of July 8th and 9th, there will be what is called "Circus Smirkus", a European style one-ring circus to be held at 7pm each evening in which a mrnber of local jugglers, clowns, and acrobats will perform. In addition, during the day from about noon to 6pm there will be a midway going on. I encourage all interested jugglers in the area to stop by and participate in an open Jugglathon. We'll be giving lessons for beginners and hope that lots of old timers will come by to swap tricks and do some formation juggling.

The following weekend there will be ~'New Haven's Renaissance Fair". This will not be renaissance in the strictly medieval sense, but in the broader sense of personal, cultural, and social rebirth. Again, I encourage everyone to come and participate in an open juggle-in on both days of the weekend. Come in costume if you wish.

I teach a juggling workshop, generally on the first Sunday of each month, in New Haven. Call me for information of this or any of the above mentioned activities.
