December 1980 Volume 32, Number 7
1980 - 81 ROSTER ISSUE Like
the ticks of a clock, the appearance of the annual IJA Newsletter
membership roster represents time passed in juggling history. But, the
increasing thickness of the roster also weighs the growth of this
organization, which is hopefully a barometer of the popularity of
juggling in general.
For
the first time ever, the IJA enters a new year with a membership of
over 1,000 --- 1 ,300 to be explicit. It took 30 years for us to
attain a four-figure membership, but popular movements seem to grow
exponentially rather than mathematically. That fact indicates that the
next digit should not be so long in coming!
To help maintain our fraternity's strength and nurture its growth, members should pay dues promptly and encourage others to join. The amount you owe to maintain membership in 1981 is printed beside your name on the address label. Sharp-eyed people may have already noticed an increase in dues to $10 individual and $12 family. This was recommended by the Board of Directors and approved by a vote of the membership at the Annual Meeting during the convention in Fargo last summer.
Please
cut out or copy your address label and mail it, along with a check made
out to "IJA," to:
International Jugglers Association, PO
Box 29 Kenmore, NY 14217
The
IJA Board of Directors begins the New Year with resolution to improve
its prestige in the juggling movement. Our 30-plus years of
torch-bearing thus far have certainly established the organization as a
major force in juggling. However, when the ranks begin to swell,
torch-bearing will be no substitute for leadership. To become the recognized chief of a tribe, one must gain extraordinary insight into peoples' feelings, and then interpret that into action that others will follow. You
will read about current efforts to popularize juggling in future
Newsletters. Those same pages are available for your reaction and
suggestions for future action. Please exercise that prerogative.
Juggling can be as popular as frisbee, soccer or bowling. Achieving this, it will provide experts a better forum for their skills and lesser practitioners the support of masses. The current Directors accept their duty in this challenge purposefully and eagerly.

"Don't drop out now! Pay your dues!" Secretary-treasurer Rich Chamberlin (l), assistant secretary-treasurer Jenny Rose (r) and Matt Bissonette (c), all members of the Buffalo, NY, juggling club, convey the message from a photo parlor in nearby Niagara Falls. |
