Monte Carlo meeting set for Gatto and Ignatov

IJA JUGGLER ANTHONY GATTO will compete with Russian juggler Sergei Ignatov in the Festival de Cirque in Monte Carlo December 8-12.

Ignatov is acknowledged as world record holder for most number of objects juggled - 11 rings. At age 10, Gatto is already doing 7 balls handily. Both men do other things very well, also. The meeting of such talent and potential must surely be viewed as a remarkable event in juggling history.

The Festival has been delay-televised in the past on Home Box Office network, so armchair 7 ring jugglers may also get a chance to see the action!

Guy Theron, a native of France who has spent 50 years promoting his own and other circus acts, helped arrange the meeting. Theron said the Festival de Cirque is a circus gala held annually. At a rate of 10 acts per day for its four-day duration, performers will entertain Prince Ranier and a highbrow crowd in hopes of winning the Gold Clown.

Dick Franco, whom Gatto is replacing this month at the Reno Hilton Hotel, won an award at the 1979 Festival de Cirque.

He won't be there this year, but instead said he will be appearing in New York, where he'll treat fans to his new chainsaw juggle. With handles attached to three 11-pound Homelite XL's, Franco manipulates one and juggles three, with all the accompanying noise and smoke.

Though he admitted he's not the first to present it, Franco said audiences enjoy the dangerous trick all the same.

Theron said that Gatto's additional plans include a Christmas appearance (Dec. 23-25) at the Deutchlanholler in Berlin. In between those performances, and for an unspecified time in the future, Gatto will be staying with his father, Nick, and appearing In the Reno Hilton.
