JOGGLING New
marks established by fast first-time competitors
Two
strong runners set new IJA records in this year's joggling
The
temperature approached 90 by the 9 a.m. starting time for the
100-meter event, but didn't seem to bother the nine runners entered.
Albert Lucas of Las Vegas, on the inside lane, surged ahead of John
Ellwanger of Oklahoma City at the 70-meter mark to win with a record
time of 12.67 seconds.
It
was a grand moment for Lucas, who had been training for the event for
several months with a high school track coach. He credited some of the
victory to a special crouching start, which he claimed gave him a
faster move off the mark than runners who began in an upright
position.
Subsequent
finishers and times were: 2. John Ellwanger 13.84; 3.
Kenneth 4. Ed Callan 16.04; 5. Mike Draney 18.91; 6. Cas Saverino; 7. Paul Bernardo; 8. Patrick Donahue; 9.
Jim Piaskowy.
Kirk
Swenson, a 19-year-old junior at Amherst
College, joined the IJA the day
Swenson
charged ahead of the field at the first turn on the gravel-surfaced
track, and was never threatened. He said he has only been a joggler
for a month or two, and was pleased to be a winner in the IJA, since
he is only an average runner on Amherst's track and cross country
teams.
Other
finishers and times were: 3. John Ellwanger 5:23.70; 4. Paul Bernardo 5:47.93; 5. Albert Lucas 5:53.45; 6. Mark Krauska 7:08.23; 7. Mike Draney 7: 18.31; 8. Reg Bolton 7:50.03; 9. Ed Callan 8:01.37; 10. Patrick Donahue 8:02.20. |
