IJA Convention Poll

Three probing questions for randomly-selected individuals: when, what and how.

Under what circumstances did you earn your last dollar as a juggler?

Shelly Harris, Washington , D.C. - "It was performing for members of the Supreme Court and NBC television network executives at an NBC Christmas party. I almost tripped Caspar Weinberger!"

David Morgen, Toronto , Canada - "It was doing a street act  in Toronto while wearing a Richard Nixon mask. There are a lot of American tourists in Toronto and they think it's pretty funny! To earn my next dollar, I'd like to do the same thing, but better."

Jon Held, Boulder, Colorado - "Airjazz at a triathalon tried to entertain while athletes were out in the field. Spectators were scattered all over the place and speakers were blaring. We finally found a sandwich shop over to the side, gathered a few people and started our show. Within a few minutes the speaker announced the first cyclist was coming in and everybody peeled off to go see him! The next dollar we earn will be a pound - we're performing on the BBC's Paul Daniels Show in England!"

Keith Johnson, Minneapolis, Minnesota "It was doing the Great Northern  Rendezvous festival in Minnesota . I play Jons the Juggler, speak with a Norwegian accent and act slow and ethnic. The next dollar I'd like to earn would be in Norway, doing a performance there as a dumb American! "

David Cain, Middletown , Ohio - I'm  president of the juggling club at my high school and we earn some money for equipment by doing shows around town. We've got 60 members and it's been going on for five years. We do a lot of passing patterns and I can do five clubs and a seven ball flash. We've got three guys already planning to compete in the Juniors in '87 in Akron!".

What was the last trick you learned?

Bob Nickerson, Gallitzin, Pennsylvania "I learned to do an ax and pool cue together so I could use the pun, .'Axe-cues me,' in my act."

Todd Strong, Seattle , Washington - "I learned Mill's Mess with devil sticks. The next thing I want to learn is under the arm curls with two devil sticks. I also want to follow Charlie Brown around and learn cigar boxes from him."

Under what circumstance did you last receive an ovation as a juggler?

Dave Walden, Boston , Massachusetts "It was during a company party when I did two bean bags and a piece of cake with chocolate frosting. The next time I want to do something smarter than frosting, I still haven't gotten it off my bean bags!"

Larry "Round" Ellenson, Toronto, Canada - "Friends I made at the convention last year gave me some acclaim for the progress I've made since then. I bought clubs last year and can juggle them now. "

Jim Bayliss, Austin , Texas - "It was doing a show for disadvantaged children at a summer camp in Austin . I do mostly a roping act, including trick roping on stilts, and bill myself as The World's Tallest Cowboy."

Michael Kass, "It was today in the gym when I was practicing. I did a kick-up, start of three clubs that were propped together in a tripod."

Terry Hurd, Naples, Florida - "It was doing walk-arounds on the beach with my partner, Bob Goetzelman before a fireworks show. I like being on stage anywhere. Any ovation is a good one."

Bob Whitcomb, Columbus , Ohio - "It was last Sunday night in a pedestrian plaza in Stuttgart , Germany . But I had a heck of a time getting there. I left New York for a five-week tour of Europe to see what the street scene was like. When I landed in London I said I was a street performer and the customs people held me for six hours, then put me on the next plane back to New York because I didn't have a work permit. That detour cost me $400! I hope the next ovation I get will be on Venice Beach in California , but due to the lack of money I didn't earn in Europe it's going to be tough to get there."
