Bring On The Chaos! Madrid's Malabaristas Hold First Big Bash

Madrid's Asociacion de Malabaristas held its first big party on March 2. In typically Spanish chaotic fashion, the show began late and someone hid the microphone. Aside from that, everything was wonderful!

The bar was full and the dressing room was even worse. The show began with Ant-Platas, a juggler with 45 years experience in nightclubs. Though he wasn't used to this type of crowd, he dazzled the audience with ball spinning two and three high, catching audience throws with his mouth stick, and bounces with soccer balls. Then he floored them with a display of everything that can be done with up to six tennis rackets.

A classic clown number followed, The Symphony With Saw by Alehop, a magnificent group of circus professionals. Between jokes by Roman, the M. c., two wonderful mimes presented their acts. Abstemio Gordon juggled the heavens and Lalo was the punk mime. The first part closed with delightful music by Monica and Carmen.

As the audience tried to catch its breath, Malo El Malisimo offered a juggling lesson on stage. Using a hatchet, sickle and machete, he explained that the hard part was stopping! The world's only flamenco jugglers, The Trompicheli's, fought with their clubs as a bullfighter would with a bull. To end the show, Madrid's comic duo of Rudy Calzado and Carlos Faemino did impressions of the world's most famous monuments. The show's finale was hot four-person torch passing that almost brought the house down and the insurance rates up!

The final conclusion was that it was a great party. How long can we resist organizing another one?

Drexel Hosts Lucky Seventh

The Drexel Hill, Pa., jugglers have hosted a mini-convention for seven years, and this year's lucky seventh in January was the best so far. More than 100 people from surrounding states came to the sixhour event.

Helping make this a fine day were the parents of the school's jugglers, the school district administration, "Odd Andy" D' Alessandro and a large, well-lit space.

Highlights included on-site food, videotapes, videotaping of activities and an

excellent show. Performers included Peter (what was his last name?) doing tricks with five volleyballs, Foolsproof Follies and the incredible Cindy Friedberg with two literate recitations set to juggling. Shakespeare and Blake were never more enjoyable!

Next year we'll have more time, an evening meal and some zany competitions. Set aside Jan. 21, 1989, on your calendar now for a trip to Philadelphia!
