Large
Field of Juniors Led By Technical Champ
A
large field of Juniors Championships competitors kept the audience up
late, but the field was so talented that not many people minded.
It
was past midnight when the 16 performers finished, but it was evidently
not past the bedtime of Jason Garfield. The 13-year-old
Seattle
,
Wash.
, Cascade Juggling Club member made a strong technical showing to win
the event. He's just been juggling two years, but showed strong moves
with five balls, clubs and rings, as well as unique back crosses and a
full pirouette with four clubs.
He
was glad to be in
Denver
among friends, he said. "Friends at school don't respect my
juggling," he said. "It's good to be here where people
understand."
Garfield
said the win in his first Juniors Championship has him thinking about
entering the Individual Championships next year. "I want to learn a
lot of things for next year, like seven clubs, seven balIs and five club
back crosses. I want to win the Juniors and the Individuals."
Matt
LinnelI, 16, of
Albuquerque
, used more theatre than technique in his routine that won second place.
He began the routine seated on a park bench with a female dummy. Her
appendages turned out to be props that he kept revealing and juggling.
He juggled the three balls on her hat, then got two more for a five balI
demonstration. He also found five rings to juggle and four clubs.
Third
place went to another theme routine in which Clark McFarlane of
Princeton
,
N.J.
, juggled different props during different rounds of a boxing match. He
did some fancy unicycle riding to begin, then took on balIs and clubs in
subsequent rounds. He proved he could stand on one leg and toss back
crosses almost infinitely.
