Jogglers Spring To new 100-Meter Record

by Tom Sparough

Three of the fastest official times ever clocked for the 100-meter joggle highlighted the 1988 World Joggling Championships July 15 at the IJA convention.

Owen Morse of Tustin, Calif., set the pace with a world record first heat sprint of 12.1 seconds, breaking his previous record of 12.2 seconds. In the finals just minutes later, Albert Lucas shaved a tenth of a second off that with a time of 12.0.

But it was too late. Morse was a quarterstep ahead, winning the race with another world record time, 11.9 seconds.

"That's all I needed," said Morse, a University of California-Irvine track team member. His goal since he started the sprint joggle was to break 12 seconds. "I don't predict going any faster," he said, noting that in practice at that speed he was having trouble with drops.

Sandy Brown established a new women's 100-meter record with her 18.8 time in the second year of women's joggling. New marks were also established in all other women's events. Laurie Young became the women's distance joggling champ with her 5-kilometer effort.
