NOTES

Steve Goetz, "The Juggling Wonder" of Lawrence , Kansas , uses coffee spoons held between his toes to help spin four balls simultaneously. He says he can put a fifth one on a mouthstick. He spins up the balls in his left hand and passes them downward, setting up the whole trick without help.

* Six members of Newfoundland 's Upwardly Mobile Jugglers entertained Britain 's Price Edward as he officially opened the new Prince Edward Park in St. John's on June 8. On hand were the club's founders, Aaron McKim and Duane Starcher, who performed challenging club passing in cross-winds. Wayne Brown displayed complex tricks with one and two yo-yos, Ken Parsons juggled clubs and showed magic tricks, Neil Smith juggled balls on his unicycle, and clown Keith Pike brought up the rear in full regalia.

Several Boston-area jugglers were called in when the Boston Opera Company elected to replace dancers with jugglers during the carnival scene of La Traviata. G eoffry Way and Allan Moniz of the Falmouth , Mass. , Suspenders troupe joined Tom Sgouros, Carmalita Gamble and Davjd Gow were in the show. Though it sometimes seemed more like combat than high art when dodging dancers, tumblers, principals, chorus members and each other, Way and Moniz managed to squeeze off a few back-to-back tosses. The jugglers as a whole received favorable mention in a review by the Boston Ledger.

Charlie Brown is back in San Francisco working at Pier 39 and the Cannery after a time in Hawaii . Famous for his box manipulations, his shows include "a wild three box sprint, where I do every trick you can do in 45 seconds," he said. Stand back as he does it, though, because Brown claims he sweats more than any other performer! He also does a 10 box herringbone balance on chin, then lies down flat on his back with the stack still balanced. With plans to work on new material, Brown is constructing a 16x 16-foot performance studio at his home.

Notice anything unusual about the following sentence... .. He is a registered professional engineer, a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a member of the International Jugglers Association." The person is Harry Freeman of Cincinnati , Ohio , a research program manager with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Freeman wrote the passage for the" About the Editor" section of his new book, Standard Handbook of Hazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal. It has just been published by McGraw-Hill.

Three San Francisco-based jugglers were recently picked from an open casting call to appear in a Reebok commercial. It will air nationally during the Olympics in Seoul , Korea . They are: Mark Richardson, who last year received the key to the city of Osaka , Japan ; Mary Spenger, who recently performed at the Silk Road Exposition in Nara , Japan ; and Charlie Brown, who hasn't been to Japan yet but likes Japanese food!

Larry Forsberg, known on the street as John Q. Public, also practices acupuncture in San Francisco . This certified practitioner says his treatments can be helpful for pains ranging from juggler's wrist to unicyclist's knee to balancer's neck. He's offering half-price treatments to any IJA members "passing" through.
