IJA Membership Survey

We are proud to present the results of our first IJA membership survey, and thank Alan Howard and IJA secretary Rich Chamberlin for compiling the data.

The numbers given are the percentage of the entire sample that selected that choice. Since every person did not answer every question, not all percentages total 100. On other questions, people were asked to select more than one choice, so the percentage total is more than 100.

JUGGLER

by Lucien Stryk

Someone with skill juggles

three worlds together,

rainbow, miraculous arc.

Something compels a fourth,

widening the circle. Five,

six float in the charged

steep of his mind: soon

others whirl his wrist.

Seven, eight -- now he's on

his toes, up, up, rising

with the music of the

spheres. Still unsatisfied,

risks the lot, down on his

knees. He dare not drop one.

Our lives depend on it.

(Lucien Stryk is professor of English at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb. He is the author of several books of poetry and a leading translator of Japanese poetry. His numerous awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship, a NationalI Translation Center grant and many others. This poem is reprinted with the permission of the Ohio University Press, Athens.)
