NOTES

When Colorado University student Steve McPike proposed to Kristen Giraud on April 1, it took him a long time to convince her it wasn't an April Fool's joke. But once she discovered he was serious, the pair of IJA members wasted no further time, and were married the next day. They were long-time friends whose romance developed when they both learned to juggle and began spending more time together doing that. They're planning to attend the Montreal festival as a delayed honeymoon trip.

Almost a dozen comedy variety artists from around the world will appear this summer in "MultiCoMedia," a three-week show at the Olympic Arts Festival in Barcelona beginning July 14. Producers Sue Hunt and her husband, Alberto Navarro, are using laser lights and slide projections to enhance the performances, which will be held daily in the center of town on an inflatable stage. The acts scheduled include Americans Michael Menes, Fred Garbo, Waldo & Woodhead and Magician of the Year Jeff McBride. Others include American expatriates Moshe Cohen, a clown, and juggler Paul Morrocco. Add to this lineup the English mime Les Bub, Dutch/Canadian jugglers Michiel Hesseling and Jean-Michel Pare, Italian juggler/comedians Fratelli Zucchini, German diabolo artists Jan & Carol Springer, Australian mime Rob Spence, Spanish unicyclists Boni & Caroli and the German walking act, The Crazy Idiots.

Clown Tim Schooley of Sacramento, Calif., seriously injured two vertebrae in a skiing accident in March. He was paralyzed on his left side for a week, but has been slowly recovering his motor functions. Schooley said he dreaded the potential of never juggling again, since he could previously do five balls and four clubs, and was an avid club passer. He decided to start working his way back in mid-May, and picked up

three balls again. He did manage a cascade, leading him to claim to be "the first (non-angelic) person to juggle while wearing a halo" (a device designed "Sparky" returns to tl to prevent head movement). He added, "Although I have finally found a trick that Anthony Gatto hasn't attempted, I wouldn't recommend that anyone try this at home!"

IJA member Pat Arehart, a.k.a. "Sparky," made her return engagement to the White House Easter Egg Roll on April 20. As a strolling performer, Sparky delighted the crowds with juggling, puppetry and general buffoonery. The Easter Egg Roll is an annual event that dates back to 1879 and now attracts more than 25,000 people.

Sandy Merritt and Jim Gardner of the UNC Juggling Club entertained at a rally for North Carolina Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Gardner in early May. For a finale they passed clubs around Hunt, who was particularly amused that one of the passers was Jim Gardner, since that happens to be the name of his Republican challenger in the November election. Hunt made sure that the two Jims were not related before he allowed the passing to continue around him!

Kris Kremo is juggling now at the Lido nightclub in Paris, following a successful season with Circus Knie in Switzerland in which he received the Golden Elephant Award from Knie for outstanding achievement: Kremo also received an International German Entertainer's Award for an appearance on a German television show. He recently taped a 45-minute television special for Swiss television called "Catch," the story of the long hours it takes for a professional juggler to put together an act. He appeared as the star juggler along with a cast of 12 dancers and three other people.

The only one-armed juggler in the US, Dale Jones of St. Louis, was featured in the April 13 edition of "People" magazine.  Jones, 35, has been a fulltime performer since attending Ringling Brothers Clown College at 21. He now works at state fairs, trade shows, colleges and cruise ships.

Philipp Dammer and Joram Seewi, performing as "Fingertips," won a nationwide German TV show, "Hast Du Worte," last April with a six club passing comedy routine.

American Wally Eastwood and Cuban Miguel Angel Herrera won special awards at the first Circus Stars Festival in Verona, Italy, in January. English juggler Patrick Lemoin and Russian juggler Arslanov both won bronze medals at the 15th World Festival of the Circus of Tomorrow, while Swiss juggler Criselly won a special prize. Meanwhile, French juggler Franck Zavatta won a special prize at the Sixth World Festival of the Circus of the Future.

Jugglers appearing in Monte Carlo's 16th Circus Festival in January included Carter Brown, an American hoop roller appearing this year with Sweden's Circus Scott, Spain's Pepito Alvarez, and Russia's Serguei Begboudi, who received a special prize for juggling fire hoops on horseback.

Misha Ivanov, an 11-year-old Russian, was runner-up in the 1992 Monte Carlo young artists competition. He is performing until January with the Moscow Circus on its tour of South America and the Iberian peninsula. He is the son of Alexander Ivanov, a longtime wire-walker with the same circus.

Ken Carlson juggles balls, rings, knives and torches while balancing a spinning plate at The Great Impasta in Warwick, R.I. He is also hosting a comedy showcase there every Sunday night and invites IJA members to give him a call  to schedule an appearance on the show.

Mark Nizer was one of the "Other Young Comedians" who appeared along with the youthful (Not!) Bob Hope on an NBC TV special March 14.
