Fun & Games In Montreal

While the championships are restricted to the creme de la creme of jugglers, IJA festivals since 1990 have featured lighthearted Games open to everyone. The results of most of them are printed below, but the events are so light-hearted that results of some events were not recorded! We apologize to those who are unrecognized, and ask that they send in their name, place and event so we can set the records straight.

It appears that more people are getting into the Games spirit all the time. The Montreal festival featured The Great Canadian Juggling Contest, sponsored by the Toronto Juggling Club. Its members piled a box full of "Canadian" items such as skis, toques, moose slippers, salted cod and hard tack, and invited contestants to "do something" with the contents.

Third place in this creativity contest went to Brian Fahs, who crossed a pair of skis with a lacrosse stick, proceeded to suspend almost everything in the box on the cross and balanced the resulting sculpture on his head.

Second place went to Andy Ford, who proved that Newfoundland fishermen don't have to hang up their fishing nets just because of the cod fishing moratorium. Instead, they can do what Andy did - have some friend hold the net held taut and bounce juggle three hockey pucks against it.

The Grand Prize winner, Rex Boyd, did a shaving act - hoser-style! He sat down, lathered up with Canadian shaving cream, laced up a pair of ice skates and twisted his body to scrape his face with the blades! He was showered with (naturally!) Canadian prizes-including a trophy and a genuine Toronto Blue Jays batting jersey.

To follow up on that contest in 1993 the question becomes, "What's unique to a Great Plains state like North Dakota to challenge the wit and quick hands of jugglers?" Well... anyone for buffalo chip stacking?!!
