NOTES

* David Lucas spends almost 30 minutes on stage in a new afternoon production, "High Pressure," at the Union Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas - and does a lot more than juggle. The 23-year-old brother of Albert Lucas has two segments during the show, and his act includes scarf, machete and tennis racket juggling, as well as some verbal comedy and a banjo solo playing "Sunrise, Sunset." Besides performing in the show, he's giving tennis lessons as the assistant pro at the Desert Inn.

* Juggling archivist Karl-Heinz Ziethen is serving as artistic advisor for the new Wintergarden Variety Theatre in Berlin. The name recalls that of one of the most famous pre-World War II clubs in Europe, and the club was to open September 25.

* Dave Henley from Columbus, Ohio, spent the summer juggling six-a-days at Busch Gardens in Virginia. His show included seven balls, a five torch finale, fire eating, three torches on a rola bola while spinning a fire wheel on a mouthstick, and riding a 40-inch unicycle.

* Kevin Delagrange, president of the Northern Ohio Juggling Institute, is pictured doing five balls in

a business suit on the cover of the August issue of Modern Tire Dealer magazine. The photo illustrates a cover article on "A Fine Juggling Act: Tire CEOs reveal their plans for success on many fronts."

* Bob Whitcomb reveals his secrets for juggling bowling balls in the new Houghton Mifflin book, "Tricks of the Trade." Edited by Jerry Dunn, the book compiles interviews with 79 experts and celebrities on their specialties. In June Whitcomb entertained in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, at Ameriflora '92, an international floral exposition celebrating the 500th anniversary of Columbus arrival in the West. His show includes a juggling tribute to Columbus' voyage and the juggling of flower bouquet clubs.

* Terri Wadding of Minden, Nev., sports the state tag JUGLER, adding that "Doug Saunders has the other G!" Mag Hughes, who owns Oregon's JUGGLE license plate, teaches W.E. C.A.R.E. juggling workshops in the great Northwest. He is pictured on the next page with the members of a class he taught this summer.

* Cindy Marvel and Gene Jones appeared on the MTV show, "Hangin' With MTY," in June to celebrate National Juggling Day. A live studio audience watched as Jones hurriedly tried to teach 10 young volunteers to juggle while a video played, then the world watched as they showed what they learned at the conclusion of the video.

* Non-performer Dave Torok opened for Bob Nickerson with about a half-dozen diabolo tricks at the Rockland, Maine, Lobster Festival following the IJA's Montreal Festival.

* Kathleen O'Regan of New York City relaxed with a bit of juggling just before her May 30 marriage to Michael Wrenn. The couple, who are also active in the art of origami, were at the IJA festival in Montreal.

* Juggling at the Benedictine School in Maryland got a boost from the article about its therapeutic application for the children there which appeared in the Spring issue. Teacher Lorraine Slama now needs more equipment for the 3040 additional students her program has attracted. If you've got equipment to sell, write her at Church Hill MD.

* Here's an 10-year report on the Porterville, Calif., hunger fund, which is financed in part by sales of juggling balls hand-made by Irma Donaldson. Myron Wilcox reports that in since 1982 the church has sold 1,797 balls, and raised $4,324 by selling them, and through paid lessons and programs.
