EYES ON NEW YORK

Man on scene tracks jugglers in Big Apple

By Gene Jones,  Director - New York, New York

NEW YORK CITY CONTINUES TO be a big center of juggling activity. This year's Christmas season brought a high demand for jugglers at a wide variety of events and parties.

Legendary IJA member Arsene was sighted briefly in the Big Apple, as was Dick Franco, who slipped into town for a one-night engagement at the Cafe Versailles. Dave Cullen continues to enthrall movie line crowds with his street act, while Bill Gillen of Brooklyn has become the first reported five ball joggler. Gillen is often seen joggling across the Brooklyn Bridge, and says he has joggled his five for up to ten miles!

Francis Brunn headlined with the Big Apple Circus during the month of December along with Natalie Enterline, who stunned audiences with her brilliant hat and cane manipulation routine.

Network wants to work for you!

The newly-formed Juggler's Network has been growing slowly but steadily, with information trickling in from around the country. However, there seems to be some confusion as to the purpose of the endeavor.

The Juggler's Network was created to provide a central clearing house for performing jugglers. The UA receives numerous calls from individuals and businesses nationwide who need jugglers. Since the roster does not have any information other than addresses, another resource is needed.

The Juggler's Network will not make any qualitative distinction between jugglers, but will give callers the names and numbers of available performers in a specified area. Should the request be more specific, i.e., a cigar box juggler, then we will attempt to accommodate the request.

To participate, send pictures, brochures, press clips, and resumes, along with your address and phone number to: Gene Jones, Juggler's Network, New York, New York.

Juggler John Grimaldi was featured daily at Macy's, while John Genack and Robaire spent an afternoon juggling and unicycling for a special Burger King promotion in midtown.

Tony Duncan, Charlie Frye, and David Tabatsky all juggled in the New Year at the Warner AMEX MTV New Year's bash at the Savoy. Duncan and Steve Bernard are teaching classes in their Soho loft Wednesday and Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons. Classes include juggling, ropewalking, devil sticks, and cigar boxes.

New York bids a fond farewell to Charlie Frye who just left to open at Harveys Resort Hotel and Casino in Lake Tahoe. Also, a fond farewell to Foolsfire (Moschen, Garbo, and Berky), who recently embarked on a European tour that extends as far as Hong Kong and Australia.

Hovey Burgess was sighted numerous times at the Big Apple Circus in December and continues to teach his wellestablished circus arts course at New York University.

On the local party scene, jugglers Bette Larusso, Lisa Loving, Jocko McKean, Steve Ringold, David Charne, Mary Dino, and Toby Barantine performed at numerous events throughout the metropolitan area. Yours truly was also featured at more than 40 events in the month of December.

Passing through town on a research assignment was circus expert and IJA member Reg Bolton, who made the rounds of visiting all the Big Apple jugglers.

New York jugglers mourn the demise of Brian Dube's open juggling sessions, though Dube continues to manufacture and sell equipment at his Park Place studio.
