1992 IJA AWARD WINNERS

1992 IJA Award of Excellence

Michael Moschen

Michael Moschen's path to performance success has led across deserts of introspection where few jugglers have dared tread.

In 24 years of quiet study of his props, his body, his mind and the world around him, Moschen has developed totally new forms of manipulation that stand out in bold contrast to the work of legions of look-alike jugglers...

His silent performances are spectacles of intense beauty. He minimizes his own presence through blank expression and a dark body suit, and instead highlights instead the unique motions of his props...

Because he has followed his own heart and found within himself the creative spark that most never search for nor unleash, he serves as a role model for all. We look to Michael Moschen in hopes of learning more about ourselves, and are proud to honor him with the IJA Award of Excellence.

1992 Historical Achievement Award

Lotte Brunn

Lotte Brunn's father, her inspiration, told her as he watched her practice for hours on end that she would be the greatest. Two decades later Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus used that exact word in describing the only woman ever to appear solo in its center ring.

She was the greatest for almost 45 years at a time when performers were celebrated and revered like kings and queens. The entertainment world has changed profoundly by the time Lotte Brunn left the stage, and live variety performers have been eclipsed in the public eye by stars whose work is better suited to mass distribution.

But those of us who know juggling and know the grinding practice, exacting discipline and great courage it takes to fascinate a crowd with flying objects will always know her as a true hero. We gather tonight to celebrate that and honor her life's work....

The art of juggling was her only professional interest beginning at age 10. She was a trendsetter without knowing or caring about it, and the 45-year duration of her professional career is unparalleled. No other women jugglers influenced her work, but many have gained strength and confidence from her success.

Because she is among the elite few who have inspired with their greatness and made history with their endurance, the IJA is honored to present Lotte Brunn with its Historical Achievement Award.
