REGISTRATION: AVOID LlNES PRE-REGISTER!

Pre-registration should be completed by July 15. See the registration form for options and prices. Onsite registration will take place at Patrick Gymnasium on the university campus. Daily admission and individual event tickets will also be available at Patrick Gymnasium. There will be no admittance to the juggling area until you have registered. For more information on registration contact Bob Mahler.

JUGGLING FACILITY

Patrick Gymnasium is located on UVM's campus just over a mile

from downtown Burlington. It's floor is 22,000-square-feet and will be open 24 hours a day for juggling.

HOUSING & CHILDREN'S HOUSING

Carpeted single and double rooms are available in the living/learning Center on the UVM campus. Suites include four to six comfortable bedrooms, a common living room and two bathrooms. Rooms are not airconditioned, because the climate usually does not require it. Halls and restrooms are handicapped accessible. Towels, bed linens and blankets are provided.

Children under age 12 can sleep on the floor in their parents' room without charge (No beds, so bring bedding for them). Please indicate on your registration form how many children will be staying in your room. Or, children may stay in an additional room at a discount price.

Located within the living/learning Center are dining areas, lounges, and coin-operated washers and dryers.

If you have pre-registered, you may pick up your room keys at living/learning Center, Tuesday-Saturday between 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.. Park your car at the living/learning Center before reporting to the gym (a threeminute walk away).

If you are arriving before Tuesday, or after 5 p.m. any day, please indicate this on the registration form so we can make special arrangements. There will be instructions on the door of the living/learning Center for those who arrive at odd hours.

You will not be able to get a room at UVM until you have registered for the festival. If there are still rooms available at festival time, you may register for them at Patrick Gymnasium upon arrival.

PARKING

$2.00 per day per car. RV parking is available on campus, but we need to know your requirements. Parking permits will be for sale at registration.

OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS

The Sheraton Burlington and the Ramada Inn and Conference Center are the IJA's offical Festival Hotels. Call the Sheraton or the Ramada and tell them you are with the IJA Juggling Festival to receive a special festival rate. For a full hotel/motel list, send a SASE to the IJA; Montague, MA.

CAMPING

There are several camping facilities located in the area. The closest is North Beach Campground on Institute Road, two miles from the university. North Beach Campground has tent and RV spots, swimming, camping, picniking and a playground. For more information on campgrounds and a Vermont Guide call the Burlington Convention Bureau.

FOOD

The festival meal plan begins with lunch on Tuesday, August 9, and goes through Sunday breakfast, August 14. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served in one

common facility in the dining room at the living/learning Center. Vegetarian entrees will be available at all meals. If you are staying on campus, the 15-meal plan is mandatory. Mobile units sell food on campus, a 10-15 minute walk from the gym. Campus facilities also include the UVM Dairy Bar and fast food at Waterman Manor.

TRANSPORTATION

Burlington is easily accessible by air, car, bus or ferry.

The Burlington International Airport handles over 80 flights a day and is only a ten minute ride to campus. A city bus route goes from the airport right by campus with no transfers. Taxi fare runs between $5 and $8 between campus and the airport.

If you prefer to drive, Burlington is located just off Interstate 89 (use exit 14 west for UVM). Passenger and auto ferries cross scenic lake Champlain between Vermont and northern New York State at three different locations. Bus and rail passenger service is available throughout the Northeast and Canada.

Eager Travel Corporation is proud to be the IJA's official travel agency and has negotiated discount airfares for festival attendees. Eager guarantees the lowest available rate, and by using Eager you will also directly benefit the IJA. When calling Eager for airline reservations or information, please keep the following tips in mind:

Airfare prices, availability and restrictions are constantly changing, so unless you purchase your ticket within 24-hours of your call, do not assume that what you were quoted is still available. In order to obtain the lowest available airfare, you must book your reservations at least 14 days in advance and stay over a Saturday night. However, we suggest that you try to confirm your reservations 30 days ahead since the number of seats available at a supersaver fare are restricted. Special fares may also be based on traveling certain days of the week, so see if this is an option for you. Try to be somewhat flexible in your departure and return flight times.

Airlines run "fare wars" occasionally, however there is very little advance notice. If one should go into effect you can save an additional 30-40% off the supersaver fares, but keep in mind the "wars" usually only last about three days, and it is extremely difficult to get through to the airlines or travel agencies.

We suggest you fax a reservation request to Eager requesting first and second choices for departure days and times, departure and destination cities, names in party, and a day and evening telephone contact. You will be called back the day of your request, but most likely during the evening hours. Call Eager toll free in the continental US and Canada.

STREET PERFORMING OPPORTUNITIES

Jugglers are invited to street perform in Burlington during the week at Church Street Marketplace, one of America's most successful pedestrian malls. This shopping and dining district contains nearly 200 stores and over 50 eating places. You will need a special badge to street perform, but may obtain it at the IJA booth in the gymnasium.

WORKSHOPS

Dozens of one-hour workshops covering a wide variety of juggling skills will be offered during the festival. If you are interested in teaching workshops, contact Mike Vondruska.

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS

The Art of Failure with Avner the Eccentric.

A special two-hour workshop Friday, August 12, introduces you to the art of creating a comic character.  Limited space available, so advance registration is necessary. Call Mike Vondruska.

Looking to the Future of Your Performing Opportunities

Must jugglers, like many professionals athletes, look at their major work occurring in their younger years? Must they live in fear of the "new gunfighter syndrome," whereby faster, flashier and funnier jugglers force them to retire? Join Benny Reehl, Sam Kilbourn and Avner the Eccentric on Friday, August 12th for a dialogue about what performance options jugglers can explore after their 40th birthday.

CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Kapell  System will not be used. Instead, judging will be based on the ordinal system of awarding a gold, silver and bronze medal to the top three jugglers in each event. The IJA champion, winner of the Seniors event, will also be presented with the IJA Championship Trophy. Medal-winners in championships will share $3075 (Note: Prize money reported in Winter issue was incorrect.). New championships director Dan Holzman promises that the championships will be a professionally-produced evening of entertainment. Holzman will be assisted by Martin Frost in the numbers events, and by Larry Kluger and Mike Hout in joggling. For more information, contact Holzman. Questions and suggestions regarding rules should be directed to Arthur Lewbel.
