NOTES

* Lots of people speculate about the outcome of juggling while parachuting, but it seems no one ever does anything about it for obvious reasons! However, skydiver John Kennett did try it with clubs on two jumps in June 1991 at Netheravon in Wiltshire, UK. He made both jumps from 3,500 feet, held the clubs in one hand and quickly opened his 'chute after just a couple seconds of freefall. He reports, "Having checked my canopy, made sure I was over some empty space on the airfield, and turned into wind so that I didn't go sailing away into the distance, I started to juggle. A ram-air canopy has a forward speed of about 20 miles per hour, so it was like juggling in a strongish wind. Suffice to say I soon dropped and watched helplessly as my club fell about 2,500 feet. I wondered whether it would stabilize and go screaming in, but it continued to tumble at a very leisurely rate and took ages to land! I watched it all the way in to remember where it had landed. I thought that I would probably have to drop the other clubs before my landing, but with one in each hand it was easy enough to hold the steering toggles, too. Sadly. I didn't get any photos, but there is a great opportunity her for some outstanding pictures. Any juggling manufacturer feel like sponsoring a skydiving team?"

* Las Vegas performer Steven August was one of the acts included in the "WOW Show of World's Most Awesome Acts," which was broadcast February 5 on ABC-TV. The 19 unusual acts filmed included men who shot apples off each others heads, contortionists, a man who breaks bricks under water with his foot, and a pididdler who spun everything from microwaves to suitcases on his fingers. August did his trademark illusion, balancing a flaming barbecue grill on his face, then pulling it down, covering it with a top and pulling a 10-foot live python from beneath the cover! Juggler Jack Taylor also appeared in the show juggling chain saws. In the variety act August has performed worldwide for the past 15 years, he juggles up to seven rings and makes a macaw appear from a scarf juggle. He also juggles three plugged-in blow driers, twisting the cords at first and then reversing the pattern to untwist the cords.

* Comedy juggler Jeff Taveggia performed for former President Jimmy Carter and his family, who were vacationing for New Years along with an entourage of eight Secret Service men on board the "Song of America." Taveggia is working for Royal Caribbean cruise lines through January 1997, splitting time between the "Sovereign of the Seas," the "Monarch of the Seas" and the "Nordic Empress."

* Yuri Kreis, an umbrella juggler featured in the fall issue of Juggler's World, won a gold medal for ground acts at a year-end circus festival in Sarasota, Fla. He will be performing a 15-minute version of his act at Disney Worlds EPCOT Center through the end of September.

* Joann Swaim's appearance on the popular public television series, "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" will be rebroadcast on July 23, for those who missed it on February 20. Joann, 16, taped the show in November, and appears for about two minutes doing tricks with from three to seven beanbags, including her trademark "Swaims Square."

* The IJA affiliate in Wichita, Kansas, formerly known as "I Think I'll Pass," has adopted a new name 'The Do-Dah jugglers." Their first engagement under the new name was at a New Years Eve fundraising gala. Club member Dan Fitzgerald reports, "We learned a valuable lesson at this gig: Make sure you tell the people in charge that jugglers need light. When we showed up we found the lighting really dim to create a romantic atmosphere."
