President's Report

BUSINESS AND PLEASURE

By Gene Jones, IJA President

On February 27, IJA officers met in Kenmore, NY, for the 2nd Annual Winter Business Meeting, hosted by Secretary / Treasurer Rich Chamberlin and the Buffalo Juggling Club. The following is a brief review of the decisions made at the meeting.

The Board of Directors voted to accept a proposal to amend the articles of incorporation to comply fully with the Internal Revenue Service requirements for tax-exempt status. Final ratification of this amendment will be voted on at the next meeting of the Board. We have been informed that the final decision on our tax-exempt application is only a few weeks away.

The IJA will continue to produce six publications annually. Beginning September 1, JUGGLERS WORLD will be mailed February 1, May 1, September 1 and December 1. The Roster will appear every fall, and a Convention Update will come out in June.

After two years of discussion, the Board decided that we must add a postal surcharge for overseas members wanting to receive publications by air mail. It costs the IJA $1.68 per copy to send JUGGLERS WORLD overseas by air mail. Consequently, a $7 annual postage surcharge was voted into effect as of March 1.

At the Annual Business Meeting in Cleveland last summer, the general membership passed a proposal requiring the Board to formulate a plan for the establishment of local IJA chapters. After considerable discussion and friendly debate, the Board voted to officially recognize and support local chapters around the world under the following conditions:

-Each organization must have 10 IJA members.

-A $25 one-time initiation fee must be paid to the IJA.

-Each Organization must list a coordinator, and his or her permanent address and phone number.

-Each chapter must submit an annual report.

-Each chapter must submit an official name, subject to IJA approval on a first come, first serve basis.

-Each chapter must obey the By-Laws of the IJA.

In return, the IJA will supply chapters with the following services:

-Issue an official charter to each chapter.

-Provide restricted use of the IJA logo.

-Maintain a special listing of chapters in the annual Roster.

-Supply informational handouts on how to run events and generate publicity.

-Allow chapters to purchase IJA mailing labels.

-Appoint a Chapter Coordinator to officially communicate with and assist IJA chapters.

With the establishment of this official policy, the IJA is now prepared to accept applications from juggling groups wishing to become IJA Chapters.

As time progresses, there will certainly be an expansion of services and activities, such as regional conventions, that can be coordinated between local levels and the central organization. Suggestions always welcome, as are inquiries for further information. All correspondence regarding IJA chapters should be sent to PO Box 29.

I urge anyone interested in forming a chapter to attend this year's Annual Convention, where we will hold workshops on the subject...

... which brings me to the most immediate and important issue of the day - THE 35TH ANNUAL IJA CONVENTION IN SANTA BARBARA, CA!

The facilities and setting of UCSB promise to make this year's gathering the most exciting and luxurious convention ever. The campus is on 804 acres of beautiful landscape overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Santa Barbara is a prime vacation area located 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Summer is the peak season for this area because of its sunny weather and mild temperatures. Consequently, summer lodging rates, even at UCSB, are high and

housing is scarce. However, the quality of the facilities and service make the expense well worthwhile to IJA conventioneers.

The IJA is offering the Package Plan to members at cost. The $189 member's Package Plan price is truly a bargain, especially when considering the fact that the Holiday Inn in Santa Barbara charges $44 per night for just a room.

We must charge non-Package Plan guests $4 to view the Championships events this year because we are paying extra facilities fees for the building in which it will be held.

With 36 tennis courts, numerous volleyball courts, a duck pond, basketball courts and grassy courtyards decorated with palm trees, this year's Convention site looks more like a vacation resort than a university!

The main facility for open juggling, Robertson Gymnasium, has hardwood floors, a high ceiling, excellent lighting and 25,000 square feet of open space. There are also two upstairs balcony rooms with 3,000 square feet of additional space each.

We have also secured part of the adjacent Robertson Field for those who wish to juggle outdoors in the sunshine.  The gymnasium will be open for juggling from

9 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily, with beverages and snacks on sale at all times.
