For
runners, there is a 440 yard track a few hundred yards from Robertson
Gym. It is a beautiful track surrounded by eucalyptus trees, and the
same place where athletes such as Bruce Jenner,
Bill Toomy and Jim Ryan
trained.
We
will be staying in the Santa Rosa and Anacapa Dormitories, two minutes
from the university's private beach. The dorms feature daily maid and
towel service large lounges with fireplaces and pianos, recreation
rooms with billiards and ping pong, as well as vending machines.
Single
and double rooms are identical, each containing two twin beds, two
desks, two dressers and two closets. Some of the rooms in Anacapa Dorm
have ocean views, which will be given on a first come, first serve
basis to Package Plan pre-registrants. Please specify on your
registration form if you desire a room with an ocean view.
The
UCSB food service is excellent, providing a variety of choices at each
meal. An extensive salad bar is provided at both lunch and dinner, as
well as prepared vegetarian entrees at all meals. There
is also a wide choice of beverages and desserts.
Movie
Night, the Championships and the Public Shows will all be in Campbell
Auditorium, an intimate theatre seating 900. Because of its limited
capacity, we will hold two Public Shows. This will give opportunities
for more jugglers to participate in at least one Public Show.
The
university will provide free limousine service from Santa Barbara
airport to campus for incoming flights of registered guests beginning
July 12. Housing will be available
Monday night, July 12, but meals will not be served until Tuesday dinner.
Food will be available at other university facilities before that
time, of course.
In
addition to the exceptional facilities offered by UCSB, the IJA plans
a few improvements in the operation of this year's convention. A daily
activities board will be maintained in Robertson Gym, as well as a
ride board. For those interested in
vacationing before or after the convention, a handout with
California vacation travel ideas will be available after June 1.
I
urge everyone who plans to attend this year's Annual Convention to
pre-register as soon as possible, especially if you want a single
room. Should there be a shortage of rooms, we may be forced to double
up some of the singles. Since priorities will be determined by the
date we receive deposits, those who send in deposits early will stand
the best chance of not being doubled up.
Besides
saving the late registration fee, those who pre-register by June 1
will also be given preference of ocean view rooms. Most of all, you
will help the IJA in its difficult job of convention planning. Full
payment in advance would be very welcome, but all that is required is
the $25 deposit. More convention information will appear in the next
