A MINUTE BEFORE GOING ON stage with his partner Bryan Wendling, first time conventioneer Scott Burton got very nervous. "Sort of an 'I don't belong here' feeling," he explained.  But the judges and audience disagreed, and the Minneapolis, Minn., pair won first place in the Teams Championship.

 

The two have performed together for a year, and looked forward to coming to the Purchase convention. "We wanted to place, but all we were really hoping for was that our eight clubs back-to-back would be successful and make an impression," Wendling said. "We didn't really imagine winning.

 

To ease the pressure of competition, the duo ran out on stage clad only in bathing suits, "We had done a lot of Hawaiian luau's," Wendling explained.

 

They practice two hours a day in­dividually, and make their living juggling and performing with a vaudeville group called Sideshow.

 

In another competition moment, The Magnificent Material Stealers announced that they were about to "perform a trick that Anthony Gatto will not be able to perform in public for years."

 

Todd Strong revealed the twist to the joke as he sat down on stage, opened a beer and drank it in public with one hand while juggling two balls in the other! Amid groans, the theatrical genius of the stunt was loudly applauded.
