U.S. NATIONALS:

Anyone may compete in the private qualifying round, where three judges will determine scores based on a five minute performance. The top ten scorers in the qualifying round will have seven minutes to perform before an audience in the final round. Anyone who has won the U.S. Nationals since 1979 automatically qualifies for the finals.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Open to two or more people. Five minute time limit. No qualifying round, but registration deadlines apply.

JUNIORS CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Must be under age 18. Three minute time limit. No qualifying round, but registration deadlines apply.

STAGE COMPETITIONS GENERAL RULES AND SCORING:

For the U.S. Nationals, Team, and Juniors championships, props and style of manipulation are unlimited, but the focus of the act must be juggling.

Use live or taped music. A cassette system will be available, but each competitor must supply an operator. Prop assistants are permitted, but may only serve in that capacity.

No fire juggling will be allowed, and all competitors will be taped by the IJA.

There will be a meeting of all competitors 45 minutes prior to each event. At this time, the order of appearance will be posted (determined by hat draw) and questions answered. Entrants must compete at appointed times and stay within time limits. No time calls will be made during competitions. Two minutes will be allowed for set-up between contestants, and stage help is the responsibility of each entrant. Failure to be prepared may result in disqualification.

100 maximum points for competitors.

At the conclusion of each act, the seven judges will publicly post two scores between 1 and 10; one for technique and one for showmanship. High and low scores will be thrown out and the rest totaled. Technique scores will count as 60 percent of the total, and presentation will count 40 percent.

In case of a tie, there will be a three minute tie breaker for which new scores will be awarded. The competitor receiving the most points wins.

NUMBERS JUGGLING CATEGORIES, RULES, JUDGING:

Two categories - 1I) five clubs with three trials for longest time, 2) seven balls or rings with three trials for longest time.

Seven object jugglers must qualify with a time of ten seconds. Five club qualifying time is 30 seconds. Shortest qualifying times will compete first. Objects must do a continuous cascade or shower pattern in the air. No multiplex or floor work will be allowed. Time stops when one object hits the floor. The three trials may be taken all at once or in sequence with other competitors . Competitors may pass on one turn.

Current IJA records: Five clubs - 6:10 in 1982 (Peter Davison); Seven objects :20.89 in 1983 (Tony Duncan, balls).

NUMBERS CHALLENGE CATEGORIES, RULES, JUDGING:

Three categories - 1) six or more clubs 2) eight or more balls 3) eight or more rings.

Each category will be a separate event. Competitors must declare in advance in what category and at what number level they will begin. Competitors will be given three trials at each number. A person will be ruled to have successfully juggled a particular number of objects if that person throws every object at least twice in an acceptable pattern without dropping.

If successful at one number level, a competitor may declare an attempt at a higher number level: Winners will be those who juggle successfully the highest number for the longest time in each category .

JOGGLING RACES:

100 meter and mile only. (No unicycle joggling races this year.) Competitors must use at least three bean bags or clubs. No bouncing balls allowed. Competitors must juggle the entire distance, but may pick up drops and continue. The $5 entry fee covers both events.
