Scandinavians
bid winter goodbye with juggling fest by Marcus Mandai
The
first Scandinavian Jugglers Convention in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a
great success, even though the 13 Swedes and Fins were heavily
outnumbered by 157 jugglers from non-Scandinavian countries.
It
seems that Scandinavian juggling is based in Denmark. More than 50
persons from the host club, Jugglers Against Gravity, participated in
the three-day convention. The greatest number of people from a single
country were the Germans, but a total of 14 countries were
represented.
Held
at the sports center in the heart of the Danish capital, the
convention attracted a lot of attention. Small children from the
neighborhood seemed astonished as a participant casually tied a rope
between a tree and a sign, stepped on the rope and began juggling. One
man juggling in one of the three available halls was doing two clubs
in one hand while holding his month-old daughter in the other!
The
$10 registration fee covered a dinner on the first evening,
workshops, private lodging, a big party, public show and showing of
the W.C. Fields film, "The Great McConigle."
On
Saturday afternoon, juggling events were held in a big square. They
included gladiator juggling, twin-juggling-race,
long-distance passing and the cold thrill
ice cube juggling. A new record was set by the insensitive David
Faithfull from Scotland, who managed to juggle for 9:05 without
gloves.
