Serge
Percelly will be performing in 1989 with Circus Benneweis in
Europe, and
will join the Swiss national Circus Knie for its tour in 1990.
The
new owners of Celebration Barn Theatre will present several summer
workshops of interest to jugglers. Fred Garbo and Leland Faulkner
will teach a four week "Antic Arts" workshop at the
theatre in South Paris, Maine, June 5-30. . Faulkner and Carolyn
Brett recently purchased Celebration Barn Theater after a long
relationship with its founder, Tony Montanaro. Contact Celebration
Barn Theatre, South Paris, ME.
Judy
Finelli of the Pickle Family Circus traveled to the Soviet Union in
January with an American circus group in hopes of furthering
exchanges of artists between the US and USSR.
The
December 1988 issue of "Reader's Digest" features a
lengthy article on juggling. IJA members Joe Buhler and Ron Graham
(a former president) wrote about the heroes of our art and gave
instructions on how to juggle the cascade.
Bob
Nickerson was featured in the Jan. 9 issue of "People" as
"The Doctor of Dribble." A multiple exposure photo showed
more of Bob than of his ball dribbling, but Bob says he can do 13
tricks while dribbling four and 83 while performing three
basketballs.
Dale
Jones has been performing at a lot of fairs as well as opening for
several people, Jones is now concentrating on making videotapes and
working on "the business side of the job, which you have to do
to survive." This business work has not stopped him from making
improvements in his one-handed juggling, including a four-ball
multiplex using one hand and one knee.
Jeff
Mason, who won the IJA Individual Championship last year in Denver,
says that he will not defend his title in Baltimore this summer. He
says he will enjoy being at the convention without having to worry
about competing. Mason has been working on more diabolo tricks over
the winter. He has added a number of his one-diabolo tricks to his
two-diabolo routine, including a two-diabolo "aroundthe-world."
In addition to his solo work, Mason has launched a team project with
juggler/vaudevillian Michael Menes. They will perform at Menes'
cabaret in New Jersey this spring.
Tony
Palomino has had several chances to show off his juggling and
unicycling abilities over the last few months. He
recently appeared in three nationally televised milk commercials
where he rode a unicycle while drinking a carton of milk. He also
can be seen in the upcoming film "Homer and Eddie."
Hoping
to improve on his sixthplace finish in the juniors competition in
Denver, Jonathon Rosenberg of Oswego, N.Y., is hard at work
preparing for this year's Baltimore convention. While much of his
practice time is spent working on his act for the convention,
Rosenberg is performing regularly as "Smugpuff the Clown,"
doing balloon sculptures, magic and, of course, juggling. In a very
convention-like setting, Rosenberg won the juniors' division of the
World Juggling Championship competition in Akron, Ohio last Fall.
Robert
York is working on developing his cowboy-juggler character as he
tours the nation this year. York, who is working primarily in comedy
clubs, is also hard at work developing his workaholicjuggler
image. He was on the road for 49 weeks last year, playing dates from
coast to coast, and is scheduled to work 45 weeks this year.
Daniel
Rosen continues to split his performance time between acting jobs
and comedy club dates. He appeared on an episode of "Golden
Girls" in February
When
their dog died, Cliff and Mary Spenger lost a trusted friend as well
as the star of their renowned dog-juggling routine. But luckily for
them, they didn't have to search far to find a replacement. Goodbye
dog juggling, hello baby juggling! Mary Kylia Spenger, 17 months
old, is the newest prop in the Spenger's act. "She loves
it," says Cliff Spenger. And, he adds, so do audiences.
The
Cascade Jugglers of Seattle recently performed at the Carnival of
Hearts benefit for the March of Dimes. Among the jugglers appearing
at the benefit were the Philippine Pride Jugglers and Darrell
Toomey. "Jugglers are becoming more well known in the
area," says Halina Kiljanczyk of the Cascade club. Two of the
club's members, Matt Cantrell and Linda Siebert, appeared on a local
television show and passed clubs, did balancing stunts and performed
various ball tricks. |
Concerned relatives
convinced the bride and groom not to juggle during the ceremony itself,
but there was plenty of juggling at the reception after Steve Ragatz and
Lisa Byers exchanged gold rings last December 8th in Bloomington,
Indiana. (l-r) Rich Remsberg, Kent Phillips, Lisa Byers, Steve Ragatz
