TRICKS

For Beginner Passers

Toe Kick-up

Why bother picking up dropped clubs with your hands when you can do a classier job of it with your feet? One very casual way to get a club from the floor is to sweep the bottom of the front part of your shoe down and toward you against the top of the fat end of a club (ill. 1). The club will jump into your hand. This works with all clubs, but may damage the rubber or decoration on some European-type clubs. Extra layers of electrical tape on the club bottom will protect it. With practice, this skill is a snap.

Under the Leg

You can pass under the leg and you can do self throws under the leg. You can throw left handed under the right leg and vice-versa. All you need to know to perform any of these throws is patience. Visualize the throw and practice occasionally. It helps to exaggerate the necessary movement of your body, but do not rush your movements. In time... no problem! As you become more advanced, try fast combinations of assorted under the leg throw.

In shower passing, after any pass, quickly put two clubs into your right hand. Wait as long as possible, then throw them both at the same time to your partner. Make your left to right self throw first, then pass the two clubs at once from your right with a single spin, but high and slow. If they arrive awkwardly instead of symmetrically, try turning your wrist differently. Your partner may have .to remember to keep passing, rather than wait, as you gather clubs. Otherwise, the partner is going to be very busy momentarily!

Triple Spin Self Throw Instead of a Pass

In every others passing, throw a triple spin self throw instead of a pass. Throw the triple from your right hand to be caught in your left. While the triple is in the air, you will have to catch the incoming pass and throw a pass. The triple arrives, then you resume. This skill is a trick in itself, but is also a good basis on which to build even fancier skills. (See Shoulder Surprise)
