New IJA Directors Tackle Committee Assignments

Three new members were elected to the IJA board of directors and eight directors were reelected at the convention.

New members are: Glen Ceponis, a Philadelphia specialist in architectural restoration and leader of the Philadelphia IJA affiliate; Martin Frost, a Stanford University administrative computer programmer and founder of the IJA affiliate Stanford Court Jugglers; and Todd Strong, currently a juggling instructor at the Centre National des Arts du Cirque in France.

Rejoining the board for an additional term are: Carter Andrews of Nashville, Tenn.; Tom Bennett of Akron, Ohio; Sandy Brown of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; Rich Chamberlin of Kenmore, N.Y.; Bill Giduz of Davidson, N.C., Laura Green of Baltimore; Ginny Rose of Buffalo, N.Y.; and Perry Rubenfeld of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Former members Tripp Holmgrain and Mike V ondruska were thanked for their service as they left the board. Both vowed to remain active in IJA affairs.

A major personnel change occurred as the new board took office. After serving as secretary for 10 years, Chamberlin turned over that position to Bennett. Bennett will now maintain the IJA's membership rolls and serve as the clearing house for all IJA administration.

Chamberlin was then elected by the board as its chairman for the coming year, and he pledged to pursue progress through a committee system of governance. The following committees were established, with committee heads listed: administration - Bennett; affiliates - Rubenfeld; archives - Chamberlin; championships Green; convention - Brown and Rose; education - Ceponi; marketing - Giduz; publications - Giduz; video - Andrews.

Each committee head was urged to seek out members interested in the field to help with the work of the organization. Anyone wanting to volunteer for a particular committee should contact the committee head through Bennett at the IJA office.

Bidders Help IJA By Buying Everything From Hair To Flight Time

Juggling items from the amazing to the absurd changed hands during a funfilled convention afternoon at the Second Annual IJA Auction. The $3,300 proceeds raised by auctioneers Sandy Brown and Steve Westren topped last year's revenue by $1,000, and will help finance establishment of the IJA Juggling Archives.

At the top end of the prestige and price scale were items like seven Anthony Gatto rings that he used during the convention to set a Guinness world record. A lucky purchaser bought a set of Harry Lind clubs and another got a hat used by Kris Kremo. Vying for the oldest piece of memorabilia was a 1931 juggling poster donated by Karl-Heinz Ziethen, while a ball spun by Lotte Brunn attracted a lot of attention. The highest bid of the evening again went to two go-anywhere plane tickets from convention sponsor American Airlines.

Propmakers and' individual jugglers alike were generous in donating items for auction. There were silicone balls, clubs, diabolos and enough other props to outfit an act from start to finish. Among the more "creative" offerings were Michael Davis' screen guild card, the hairball clipped from David Deeble as he emceed the Juniors Championship, registration for next year's nudist juggling convention and Bob Nickerson's hula-hoop.

There was also plenty of product from convention sponsors Planters Snacks and Life Savers. Lucky bidders walked out with cases of peanuts, cheese curls, as well as the fruit juice and tomato juice to wash them down.

We urge IJA members to keep the auction in mind during the coming year and collect autographed props, photos, historical items and other memorabilia that would make good auction items for the Los Angeles convention. Thanks!

1990 Convention Set For UCLA In Los Angeles, And Jugglers Need To Plan For It Early!

As co-planners for the 1990 convention, we are proud to announce that the University of California in Los Angeles will be our next convention site. Weekly, over 200 groups and organizations ask to hold their conventions at UCLA, but only a small percentage of these are accepted. The IJA is one of the lucky ones!

The two gyms, student union, and Royce Hall are a stone's throw from one another. Royce Hall, site for the Individual and Team Championships and two Public Shows, is an 1,800 seat theater with the third best acoustics in the world.

This convention will be very different! Because of the enormous size of our convention, we must conform to UCLA's housing regulations. Jugglers requiring housing will have three options: Option #1 -- arrive Tuesday, depart Sunday; Option #2 -- arrive Tuesday, depart Friday; Option #3 -- arrive Thursday, depart Sunday. You may arrive or leave a day early, but you will have to pay for the entire option.

Again, this convention will be different! UCLA requires pre-registration of all rooms by June 1. Yes, it's true. If you do not pre-register by June 1 you will not have a room at UCLA. Also, the meal plan is mandatory for all people staying at the residence halls. These regulations are UCLA policy and are non-negotiable.

We are organizing this convention from our homes in Kansas and New York. We urge all affiliates and jugglers-at-large to help. A task list will be printed in the next issue of Juggler's World. But if you're ready to volunteer now, we'd love to hear from you. Contact: Sandy Brown or Ginny Rose. Thanks!
