            An article in the February issue of "Discover" magazine
            covers "Circus Science," discussing the physics and
            biology of gymnastics, balancing and juggling. It includes a series
            of strobe photos of former lJA president and AT&T mathematician Ron
            Graham juggling yellow balls, as well as several photos of
            performers from Cirque du Soleil in Montreal.

            Dale Jones is filling up his performance calendar, and invites
            jugglers to come see his show at the following venues: Fair St.
            Louis z(July 49); Ocean County Fair in NJ. (July 9-14); Orange
            County Fair in N.Y. (July 18-28); Illinois State Fair (Aug. 8-18);
            Michigan State Fair (Aug. 20-Sept. 2); Tennessee Valley Fair (Sept.
            6-15); Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair (Oct. 10-27); Florida
            Strawberry Festival (Feb. 27-March 3,1997).

            The Las Vegas juggling scene recently has included Charlie Fry performing
            card tricks, linking rings and juggling in a review show. Fry uses
            balls, clubs decorated as wine bottles and hat tricks to music. He
            also manipulates his facial muscles to the audience's great delight.
            Penn and Teller were at Bally's, and Penn juggled
            torches and broken glass bottles during the course of their illusion
            show.

            Australian performer Earl Shatford recently finished a year's
            engagement with Silvers Grand Magic Circus, and is working hard on
            his technical skills. In practice he is working on 11

            Hansen, Armando, Sir Francis and Kenny Sherburne juggle
            with the Robert Snowden Circus, closing their act with 15 torch
            passing in a darkened house... Bob Whitcomb concluded his
            bowling ball juggle for Santas Christmas Show in Cincinnati and
            Dayton with a neck catch. .. The 126th edition of the Ringling
            Brothers Circus blue unit includes "the worlds largest juggling
            display," with Gena Shvartsman in one end ring, The
            Rakhmatoullin in the other and The Ivanko in the center
            ring. .. The Ramey Brothers juggle with tennis rackets, clubs
            and hats in Allen Brothers Circus... The Gnerrero Brothers with
            Circo Mayer... the Ortiz and Alberto Caroli with
            Cirque Alexandre Bouglione in France... Antonio Alvarez and Ray
            Wold with Weltweihnartscircus in Germany... the Joowani Dno with
            Weihnachts-Circus in Germany. .. Lidia & Leonid with the
            Nationaal Nederlands Wintercircus... the Iniakini Troupe with
            the International Wintercircus in the Netherlands... Claudius with
            Circus Krone in Germany... Francis Brunn at the Tiger Palast

          passing with Steven Sallai with Bobby Roberts Super Circus in
          Scotland. . . Csaba Teres from Budapest concluding a cigar box
          act with a triple pirouette with Blackpool Tower Circus in England...
          the Companie Jerome Thomas working with balls suspended on
          bungee elastic and attached to the ends of large poles at the London
          International Mime Festival. Jerome Thomas did a long solo sequence
          bounce juggling five balls
          while seated, and concluded by juggling three feathers. *
          Strength performer John Patrick Sullivan juggled three 20-pound
          balls for 49 throws for the audience of a youth basketball league in
          Jonesville, La., in late February He has been juggling 16-pound
          bowling balls and shot put balls for some time now as part of his
          weightlifting regimen, but has lately moved to heavier objects.
          "I am very close to utilizing some 30 pound iron balls in my
          performances," he said. He hopes to have his heavyweight juggling
          feats recognized in the Guinness book.

          The January/February issue of "Mens Health" magazine invited
          its readers to meet fitness challenges for each month of the coming
          year. Among challenges such as 'Jump rope for 15 minutes,"
          "run your first 10k" and "knock five strokes off your
          golf game" was the December challenge "learn to
          juggle." The magazine article said, "Every man should be
          able to juggle, if only to impress women and amuse children at family
          reunions. So give your body a break after a year of hard exercise.
          Relax and exercise your hand-eye coordination. As a side benefit,
          juggling is a superb stress reducer." The article also included
          contact information for the IJA. 
 * Congratulations to Pat Davison and his wife, Marites, on the birth of their daughter, Maybelle G. Davison, on January 6. The Davisons were to perform with the Jose Coles Spectacular Circus this spring.  |
