  * Barbara Bush, wife of the former US President, writes in her 1994 Simon & Schuster autobiography, "Cicely Tyson was M.C. A favorite of George's, Michael Davis, a juggler - now don't stick up your nose - was hilariously funny, and Francois sitting next to me really roared. George was dying to get him to do his juggling act with chain saws, but nobody (except George Bush) liked the idea of buzzing chain saws flying all over a room with seven world leaders in it!" (Thanks to Bob Blau for the tip.)

* Bruce Manners of Medina, Ohio, appeared in the headliners show of the Columbus MagiFest, and served as the opening act for Leon Redbone during the Cleveland stop of the singer's national tour. He appeared at the Northwest / KLM Airlines booth at the National Business Travelers Association convention and has performed at many Ohio festivals and Ohio / Pennsylvania comedy clubs. His comedy based show includes work with three balls, five balls, juggling clubs over a volunteer, and a three-object juggle with bowling ball, sickle and "baby doll head of death." The 27-year-old has juggled professionally for about five years, but works during the day as an electrical engineer at a NASA research center in Cleveland doing power system research and development for the space station. He is a member of the Akron Rubber City Jugglers IJA affiliate.

* A new edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, scheduled to appear in hard cover in October, prominently features IJA joggler Rev. Mike Hout on the "Juggling" page in a sidebar story titled, "Hurdle to Heaven?"

Guinness proclaims Hout as the world record holder for the 110-meter joggled high hurdles (18.9 sec.), and explains that Hout has taught 60 to 70 members of his Kettering, Ohio, congregation to juggle. The rest of the juggling section begins a new paragraph explaining the difference between a flash and a juggle, and says that Enrico Rastelli's eight plate record is unproven, but historically accepted. Other records listed are:

12 rings flashed - Albert Lucas & Anthony Gatto;

8 clubs flashed Anthony Gatto;

11 balls flashed - Bruce Sarafian;

10 balls bounced - Tim Nolan;

8 plates flashed - Enrico Rastelli & Albert Lucas;

7 torches - Anthony Gatto;

most objects aloft - 2,478 by 826 jugglers in Glastonbury, England, June 26,1994;

5 club duration - Anthony Gatto;

3 object duration Terry Cole (11 hr, 4 min);

5 balls inverted Bobby May;

and joggling records held by Owen Morse, Kirk Swenson, Ashrita Furman, Tuey Wilson, John Wee and Bill Gillen.

* Jugglers passing through San Francisco will want to know about a change of meeting venue and time. You can toss a few there Sunday evenings 7-10 p.m. at the San Francisco School of Circus Arts on Fredrick Street. Call Karen Quest.

* Congratulations to former IJA vice president and Life Member Glenn Ceponis and Philadelphia Jugglers Club and IJA member Maria Wyzykowski, who were married June 1. They met nine years ago after being introduced at a Philadelphia Jugglers Club meeting by club founder Andy D'Allessandro.

* An article entitled "The Science ofJuggling" by Arthur Lewbel and Peter Jan Beek will appear in the November edition of Scientific American magazine. It deals mainly with how people control and do juggling, the math of juggling, including site swaps and Shannon's theorem, and robot juggling. The magazine took pictures of 1994 IJA champion Tony Duncan to illustrate the article.
