* 1992 lJA Award of Excellence honoree Michael Moschen was featured in a cover article of the August issue of "Smithsonian" magazine. The seven-page article was subtitled, "He accomplishes feats other jugglers would never even dream of, which is why this remarkable innovator is in a class by himself." Author Steve Kemper spent time with Moschen at his home in Cornwall Bridge, Conn., and focused on Moschens development of new manipulation techniques by studying objects and motion in the world around him.

 

* An article in the August 6 edition of the Boston Sunday Globe profiled The MIT Juggling Club, which is still going strong every Sunday afternoon at age 20. Club founder Arthur Lewbel was quoted, as well as longtime members Toby Ayer and Barry Rosenberg.

 

* The beginning of the academic year yielded results of the fifth annual Davidson College freshman juggling poll, conducted by Juggler's World editor Bill Giduz. The percentage of jugglers in Davidsons Class of 1999 was slightly higher than in previous years, with the biggest gain coming in percentage of women cascaders. Giduz conducted the face­to-face survey of all 422 freshmen as they checked in for the academic year, and found that 33% of 215 men and 11.5% of 207 women could do at least four cascade throws.

 

The figure for men was consistent with previous years (1994 - 33%, 1993 - 29%, 1992 - 32%, 1991 ­27%), but the women's figure was the highest ever (1994 - 8.3%, 1993 - 7.7%, 1992 - 9%, 1991 ­9%). Overall totals for classes of Davidson freshmen were: 1995 ­22%, 1994 - 20.7%, 1993- 20%, 1992 - 21 %,1991 - 18%. Giduz invites others to conduct surveys of groups to compile more accurate figures on juggling ability in the general population.

 

* Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas was seen juggling three baseballs in the dugout during telecast of a game in August. Thomas was shown doing a fairly smooth three ball cascade for three to four seconds. The commentator said, "When you're 24 games out of first place, you have to do something!"

 

* Clockwork, Jack Kalvan and Rick Rubenstein, have been booked at the Wintergarten nightclub in Berlin from August 21-November 5. Congratulations to Jack, who was married on May 27 to Kathleen Howlett!

 

* Congratulations also to Todd Smith and his wife, Cathy Boyle. Todd left the lJA festival on Wednesday morning to be by his wife's side, arriving in Cleveland just hours before their first son, Walker James Smith, was born on July 19. Walker weighed 7 lb. 1 oz. and was 20 inches tall. Smiths juggling prop company, Todd Smith Products, has also "given birth" to a home page on the World Wide Web.

* The Boogie Down Jugglers of San Francisco (D.H. Wishingstone and Doug Nolan), who bill themselves as "The Greatest Show For Earth," took their environmental edutainment show this summer to Israel Independence Day, the Oakland Zoo, the San Francisco Zoo, the Santa Clara County Fair and the Walnut Festival. Their comedy show included club juggling as a metaphor for air pollution and an anti-smoking message highlighted by knocking a cigar out of a volunteer's mouth while riding unicycles.

 

* Kris Kremo will perform in the Big Apple Circus's 'Jazzmatazz" show at Lincoln Center in New York City from mid-October through January 7, 1996.

 

* Catch This, the juggling duo of Terry Hurd and Joel Poppert, were at Universal Studios in June to film a segment for the intro of ABC's Monday Night Football. They are juggling in a San Francisco street scene, and then get swallowed up in a crowd as they rush to see a football game on an outdoor TV.
