Lauren
Mauney is adding new routines to "Castor Oil Kate's Medicine
Show" all the time. Two of the latest is in this one-woman
pioneer-era extravaganza are whip-cracking and fire eating. Muney also
does shows that include stilt walking, human puppetry, clowning, stage
fighting and modeling as a mannequin. A graduate of Barnum &
Bailey's Clown College, she appears at renaissance festivals
nationwide and corporate events, and has done street theatre
throughout the US, Canada and Europe. She, Laura Green and Becky
Saunders, along with Doubble Troubble starred in a New Year's Eve gig
in Baltimore.
The
Statler Brothers introduced their nationwide Nashville Network
audience to Dale Jones during a recent show. Jones onearmed four
minute comedy routine included balancing a tennis racket on his foot
while playing a bugle and juggling two balls with one hand, eating a
head of lettuce, and performing a four bag multiplex juggle. The
unique multiplex he caught and threw three balls with one hand while
bouncing the fourth off his knee or foot. Jones, a St. Louis juggler
who lost the use of one arm in a childhood accident, also got a nice
writeup from the Associated Press in December. He performs mainly at
fairs in the Midwest.
Joggler
Mike Hout in Kettering, Ohio, has received some national press for his
win of last summer's 100 meter IJA event. The associate pastor at Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church was featured in two recent national Lutheran
publications, "The Lutheran," and "Brotherhood
Bond."
The
new director of Ottawa's civic-owned Arts Court is Jean Besnard, a
former juggler and street performer who learned his skills in Paris,
then entertained in Vancouver, San Francisco and Hawaii with his
ex-wife, Naum. Besnard, founder of a performance company called
Cre-axion II, hopes to turn the Arts Court into a forum for theatre,
readings, lectures shows and workshops.
IJA
member Randy O'Neil sent along for our inspection the Score baseball
card of its 1990 Man of the Year, Ryne Sandberg, who was pictured
juggling three baseballs in a tuxedo. The card, number 815, cited the
Chicago Cub's Sandberg as "baseball's finest all-round player and
for his contributions to the community off the field..." In 1990
Sandberg became the first second baseman in 65 years to lead the
National League in homers, hitting 40 of them. He also set a record
for 123 games and 584 chances without an error.
The
1991 First Young Circus Stars Competition, held in Verona, Italy, in
May, featured 24 acts by performers under 15 years old. One of only
two silver medals awarded went to Soviet juggler Kristina Kokorina.
The emcee for both night's shows, Soviet clown Yuri Kuklachev, began
his opening routine by juggling hats and hoops. The event will be held
again in Verona this May 15-17.
Jugglers
interested in promotional work this summer should send a resume to
Donna O'Connor; Creative Services Inc.; Westport CT.

IJA president and current Bell Labs scientist Ron Graham was mentioned

appears in main stream catalogues... The Nature Company's Winter 1991
catalogue advertises beanbag frogs for juggling (Dart, Dyeing and
Green Poison Arrow frogs, three for $12.75), and pictures a woman
identified as Mallory from the North Berkeley store, doing the
tossing.
Coming
off of a year-long engagement at Busch Gardens, Tommy Curtin is
keeping busy with spot dates near and far. While entertaining
finishers in the Charlotte Marathon, tuxedoed Curtin showed six rings,
cigar boxes, ball spinning, a smooth three ball routine and worked
from two to four plates.
Albert
Lucas has followed Curtin to Busch Gardens, where he is juggling on
ice through April. Lucas says he's also joggling hard, hoping to break
the current 3:22 marathon record at next November's Marine Corps
Marathon in Washington, D.C. He ran a 17:42 in a winter 5 kilometer
race, and planned to participate in the Florida Sunshine Games in
June.
The
author of a forthcoming book wants to hear about unusual
juggling-related marriage proposals. John Clayton plans to publish
"Will You Marry Me," a book containing the stories of 100
unique proposals. If you know one that qualifies, write Clayton at:
Red Lodge MT.
Thanks to Terry Jones, we now have the complete results from last summer's Combat competition in St. Louis. The three divisions wound up like this: Expert - 1) Mick Lunzer, 2) Jason Lemay, 3) Shidan Habibi; Intermediate - 1) Paul Goodman, 2) George Strain, 3) Deron Barnhart; Novice

the stereo photo on page 14 of the
Winter issue as Joe Niedzialkowski
of Milwaukee.
