 Though he hasn't performed since 1970, Adrian Sullivan maintains an active interest in juggling in Jackson Heights, N.Y. Hewrites, "I still do a little toss juggling - four sticks, six balls and six rings." He sees Francis Brunn in New York City from time to time, and Sullivan says he would like to attend the Montreal festival this summer.

 

 

Lauren Mauney is adding new routines to "Castor Oil Kate's Medicine Show" all the time. Two of the latest is in this one-woman pioneer-era extravaganza are whip-cracking and fire eating. Muney also does shows that include stilt walking, human puppetry, clowning, stage fighting and modeling as a mannequin. A graduate of Barnum & Bailey's Clown College, she appears at renaissance festivals nationwide and corporate events, and has done street theatre throughout the US, Canada and Europe. She, Laura Green and Becky Saunders, along with Doubble Troubble starred in a New Year's Eve gig in Baltimore.

 

 

The Statler Brothers introduced their nationwide Nashville Network audience to Dale Jones during a recent show. Jones one­armed four minute comedy routine included balancing a tennis racket on his foot while playing a bugle and juggling two balls with one hand, eating a head of lettuce, and performing a four bag multiplex juggle. The unique multiplex he caught and threw three balls with one hand while bouncing the fourth off his knee or foot. Jones, a St. Louis juggler who lost the use of one arm in a childhood accident, also got a nice writeup from the Associated Press in December. He performs mainly at fairs in the Midwest.

 

 

Joggler Mike Hout in Kettering, Ohio, has received some national press for his win of last summer's 100 meter IJA event. The associate pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was featured in two recent national Lutheran publications, "The Lutheran," and "Brotherhood Bond."

 

 

The new director of Ottawa's civic-owned Arts Court is Jean Besnard, a former juggler and street performer who learned his skills in Paris, then entertained in Vancouver, San Francisco and Hawaii with his ex-wife, Naum.  Besnard, founder of a performance company called Cre-axion II, hopes to turn the Arts Court into a forum for theatre, readings, lectures shows and workshops.

 

 

IJA member Randy O'Neil sent along for our inspection the Score baseball card of its 1990 Man of the Year, Ryne Sandberg, who was pictured juggling three baseballs in a tuxedo. The card, number 815, cited the Chicago Cub's Sandberg as "baseball's finest all-round player and for his contributions to the community off the field..." In 1990 Sandberg became the first second baseman in 65 years to lead the National League in homers, hitting 40 of them. He also set a record for 123 games and 584 chances without an error.

 

The 1991 First Young Circus Stars Competition, held in Verona, Italy, in May, featured 24 acts by performers under 15 years old. One of only two silver medals awarded went to Soviet juggler Kristina Kokorina. The emcee for both night's shows, Soviet clown Yuri Kuklachev, began his opening routine by juggling hats and hoops. The event will be held again in Verona this May 15-17.

Former IJA president and current Bell Labs scientist Ron Graham was mentioned in a January Reader's Digest article on "Why Time Flies." Graham urges readers, "Don't be afraid to be a beginner," to keep themselves happily occupied with the passing time.

 

 

Juggling appears in main stream catalogues... The Nature Company's Winter 1991 catalogue advertises beanbag frogs for juggling (Dart, Dyeing and Green Poison Arrow frogs, three for $12.75), and pictures a woman identified as Mallory from the North Berkeley store, doing the tossing.

 

 

Coming off of a year-long engagement at Busch Gardens, Tommy Curtin is keeping busy with spot dates near and far. While en­tertaining finishers in the Charlotte Marathon, tuxedoed Curtin showed six rings, cigar boxes, ball spinning, a smooth three ball routine and worked from two to four plates.

 

 

Albert Lucas has followed Curtin to Busch Gardens, where he is juggling on ice through April. Lucas says he's also joggling hard, hoping to break the current 3:22 marathon record at next November's Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. He ran a 17:42 in a winter 5 kilometer race, and planned to participate in the Florida Sunshine Games in June.

 

 

The author of a forthcoming book wants to hear about unusual juggling-related marriage proposals. John Clayton plans to pub­lish "Will You Marry Me," a book containing the stories of 100 unique proposals. If you know one that qualifies, write Clayton at: Red Lodge MT.

Expert - 1) Mick Lunzer, 2) Jason Lemay, 3) Shidan Habibi;

Intermediate - 1) Paul Goodman, 2) George Strain, 3) Deron Barnhart;

Novice -1) Mike Sackett, 2) Terry Jones, 3) Tobin Lathrop.
