Stage Championships

at the IJA festival in Portland, OR
July 17-23, 2006

About
From the Introduction to the Rules: "The IJA Stage Championships are for the presentation of juggling as both a skill and an art. The choice of props and the style of manipulation is unlimited, but the focus of the act must be juggling. Juggling is generally defined as keeping one or more objects in motion by tossing, catching, or carrying, or balancing objects precariously. Other skills, such as acrobatics, singing, dancing, unicycling, joke-telling, magic, mime, musicianship etc. will be counted in so far as they directly enhance the overall performance aspect of the routine or to the extent to which these non-juggling skills, when combined with juggling, increase the difficulty or riskiness of the juggling. Competitors are to have a prepared, polished juggling routine, running within the time limits of the competition, with few drops."

History
The IJA began to give out performance awards in 1969 (click here for a list of all previous award winners). The Stage Championships have moved through several different systems, settling on the current Gold-Silver-Bronze medalist system in three competitions: Juniors, Individuals and Teams.

IJA VIDEO PRELIMINARIES GUIDELINES

The IJA Stage Championships competition is trying a new form of preliminary competition in 2006.

Unfortunately, we nearly always have more entries than time slots for the Championships shows, and so we must narrow down the field using preliminary competitions. In the past, all of these have been live, at the festival, a few days before the final events. This makes it difficult for entrants and prelims judges to enjoy the other activities going on at the festival. So this year, we're trying something new: video preliminaries.

We are aware that people who record their performances have an advantage in that they can rerecord many times until they feel they have a perfect act. However, we have faith in our judges that they can fairly and competently judge the actual skill levels and abilities of these entries.

We know that not everyone will be able or willing to provide a videotape or DVD of their act before the festival begins. Therefore, at least for 2006, we will still also conduct live prelims, as we have in the past. Please see the rules page for full instructions on entering the competition at the festival. Both live and video performances will be viewed by the same judges.

To encourage performers to give video preliminaries a try, we will this year waive the $10 entry fee if their tape or DVD is received on or before July 10, 2006.

Videos must be one continuous shot of the exact routine and music that would be performed in the finals. Any special cues or effects not shown in the video must be noted either at the start of the video or in writing accompanying the video. Videos must be submitted in VHS or DVD format and must be clearly marked with the full name, age, email address and phone number of the competitor(s). Videos/DVDs cannot be returned. Videos will be used solely for the purpose of these preliminary competitions, and will not be duplicated or shown for any other purpose.

If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please email Stage Championships director Craig Barnes.

Entries should be mailed to:
